Zero-sum Game

As the news of a young teenager becoming a victim of a gunshot by a police officer spreads, the city is saddened and enraged. Images of Tiananmen Square immediately comes to mind, and its memories haunt democracy seekers. Thankfully the bullet has been removed from the teenager currently in critical condition but no imminent danger. Everyone should take a moment to pray for his safety and hope this will not be repeated on anyone else.

The first live round to be shot at a protester also presents a zero-sum game, whereas how will the police justify opening fire at protesters. They claim to be in imminent danger, but video clips shows the officer ran towards the protesters with the gun pointed. He never attempted to de-escalate the situation and the argument now is whether it was justified or “according to protocol.” Not to mention the officer held a rubber bullet rifle in his left hand when he shot the protester. Were there other means for the officer to “protect” himself especially being armoured head to toe, hence was his life really endangered. As well as, did the teenager really pose a threat by holding a plastic stick and a waterboard as a shield.

this was the teenager who was shot

Despite the sad news, Hong Kong people should be proud of their resilience and determination. Even under the brutal tactics employed by the Hong Kong Police, they still endured and marched on to protect their rights. The following shows some fascinating statistics:

The police can break our wrists, put their knees on our chests or beat us senselessly but they can never shatter our will or eliminate our passion. The people will continue to rise time and time again. We have been clear with our message: 5 demands not 1 less. Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our time.
