September 28/29, 2019

For the 17th continuous weekend, Hong Kongers came on the streets in protest voicing their frustrations with its government and the Police. This weekend bears huge significance as it marks the fifth anniversary of the Umbrella movement. Which was a turning point for Hong Kong’s search for democracy as it ignited a flame inside every Hong Konger. Hence the people were eager to make a statement.

Masses of people came out to Causeway Bay and Admiralty to march and protest against the totalitarianism of the Chinese Communist Party.

In their typical tactics, Police rejected the permit application of the march and using illegal assembly as an excuse, the police fired over 87 rounds of tear gas and deployed their water cannon to disperse crowds while arresting hundreds. The police were also ruthless with their methods this weekend, senselessly beating protesters they were “arresting” as well as using their weapons against press, volunteer medics and even bystanders.

As the day goes by, the brutality of the police continues to escalate where they act as if they are above the law. It is extremely worrisome when they begin to take out their frustrations at the press, and bystanders.

Time and time again, it is evident Hong Kong people are continuously oppressed by the state and terrorized by the police. It is no different than living under martial law where people no longer have any rights. How can we proclaim support of equality and human rights if we continue to ignore the actions of the Chinese Communist Party.
